Early Mountain Vineyards is thrilled to welcome one of Virginia's most up and coming winemakers, Ben Jordan, to our team!
Ben previously held the position of General Manager and Winemaker for Michael Shaps Wineworks. He's a native Virginian who began his winemaking career in the Russian River and Dry Creek Valleys of Sonoma County before returning to the East Coast. In addition to his experience, Ben brings to Early Mountain a winemaking philosophy representative of our mission to craft high quality wines that showcase a commitment to the vineyard and the truest expression of place.
With extensive experience working with vineyards throughout Virginia, Ben will also oversee the expansion and evolution of Early Mountain's grape production. Ben will continue our "thoughtful viticulture" approach - a cross between organic, biodynamic and conventional grape-growing practices - pioneered by former vineyard manager Jonathan Hollerith who is returning to Germany to run his family winery. Jonathan will remain a close advisor to Early Mountain.
"Early Mountain has put a great deal of effort into vineyard health and fruit quality, and I'm excited to extend this approach through the harvests to come and the wines we'll make," said Ben.
Under Ben's leadership, Early Mountain will continue to grow our wine production and vineyard acreage, with a goal of producing 10,000 cases by 2020. Currently, we have more than 55 acres of vineyard, which includes estate plantings and plantings at Quaker Run, a new site in close proximity to our winery that we believe holds great potential for high-quality fruit production.
As part of our 2015 vineyard expansion, we increased our acreage of classic Bordeaux-type varietals such as Cabernet Franc and Merlot and added new varietals including Malvasia Bianca, Sauvignon Blanc and Tannat.
We're excited to add to our team and to add to our vineyard acreage. Click here for Ben's full bio and stop by the vineyard soon.
